Getting the right person for the right job is key to maximising efficiency

None of us think alike. Each person has a different way of looking at life and everyone's perspective is the correct one for them.

Some people are exceptionally good at working in a team, while others are not. While some enjoy working in a shared capacity, others are more comfortable working alone. It is not that they don't want to be a team person or are pulling people down. It's only that they want their own space to work in so that they can deliver results in their own time and according to their own standards of excellence.

I have often come across a mismatch between a person's competence and his job. When the temperament of a person fits his job, he is able to work well and the organisation benefits as a result. On the other hand, when there is a mismatch, the person remains a mediocre performer.

The days when you could simply assign a task to someone with the appropriate qualifications and expect good results are long gone. Qualifications are essential, of course, but knowing whether the temperament is suited for the job is just as important.

This is a practice we should take up individually. Begin simply by introspecting about yourself and asking the opinions of those you work with closely. This sort of basic profiling will help you understand the roles you are suited for. You need not take a decision on the basis of what people say. The decision has to be yours. When you profile your personality with the kind of job you have, and they fit, your career shoots to greater heights.

I often hear grandiose statements like 'teamwork is critical' and 'teamwork brings great success'. Fair enough. Quite a few of us are exceptionally good at team work, but there are those among us who prefer their own space. Do we have a separate thought for them or do we want to put everybody in the same basket simply because that is what we consider 'good practice'? I have my doubts, and we need to look at this issue from a different perspective.

If you see someone who wants space, give it. Give them work that fits their personality and see the results. Let's broaden the horizons of our workplace and ensure that we get the best out of every person we work with.
