Karnataka Department of Posts to further “Digital India” initiative

In keeping with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Digital India" initiative, the Department of Posts is adopting core banking, rural information and communication technology, core system integrator to further its reach to nook and corner of the country. 

Shirthady Rajendra Kumar, Postmaster General, South Karnataka Region, said under core banking project, the aim is to bring all the Post offices in India under one network. ``This helps the customers transact their account at any post office in India. Of the 775 Departmental Post offices in South Karnataka Region, 163 post offices have already been brought under core banking network. Remaining 612 offices are expected to join network very shortly,'' he said. 

He said Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance operation has also been brought under networking environment and all the 775 departmental post offices are successfully giving service to the insurant. In this connection central processing centres have been set up in all the 27 Head Post offices in south Karnataka region, Kumar added. 

Of the 1.30 lakh post offices located in rural areas, 3810 are in South Karnataka Region. These Branch Post offices are being brought under the network with Sub and Head Post offices by adopting state of the art technology. He said as many as 4,000 rural Post offices in the country have been identified for the implementation of Rural information and communication technology in the first phase and this process is expected to be completed by November 2015. 

Among the 4,000 identified rural branch post offices, 228 such offices will be networked using ``handheld'' devices which will give customers all the required facility an ATM and a branch office provides. The branch POs which will have handheld devices are Chikkamagaluru (27), Kodagu (17), Nanjangudu (32), Hassan (10), Mandya (16), Tumakuru (71) and 55 Branch POs in Udupi will be provided with handheld devices.
